I must sayy I am struck by the many similarities between my own dear slug and Dulcibella

Erskine Childers...what a life, one of my heros.

Served in British army in Great War and decorated for bravery.

But in 1914 had smuggled arms to the IRA aboard the yacht given him as a wedding present by his Bostonian FIL (whom he met in 1903 after his motorbike broke down outside his future FIL's house in New England).

Helped negotiate The Treaty.

Arrested on his way to de Valera's residence (just after the assassination of Michael Collins).

Revolver found in his pocket; sentenced to death.

Told his son to seek out all those who had signed his death warrant and shake their hands.

Told the firing squad to take two paces nearer.

Son eventually became President of Ireland........succeeeding the self same de Valera.

Quite a man eh?
