Must confess that it would nice if a legal area for them to moor could be found as they are part of the rich tapestry of the river. ?

I'm with the council on this one...

Seriously, why would we be sympathetic to travellers who break the law and don't give a flying fig for the needs of any wider community other that their own?!!!!

So I guess I'm with Eurybia on this... Only more so!
No council, indeed no country, owes it to these people to provide them with rent-free, mooring-free, tax-free accommodation. Nor should they be exempt from any other rules, laws, costs etc. that the rest of the national population adhere to. I pay mooring fees, I don't moor illegally, I don't hurl abuse or threaten people - and if I did any of these things I know there would more than likely be consequences. Why should it be any different for these people?

To calm myself for a moment, I should add that I'm not saying they should not be allowed to live on the river, just that they should be expected to adhere to he law and rules and pay in full - just like the rest of us.

Quite right too!

After all, they'll be quite happy to use Educational and Medical facilities, call the Police if somebody is threatening them, or even use our free legal aid if the Council tries to illegally remove them.

Yet will they pay to remove their rubbish, their sunken boats, even their excrement from the River?

Just like the Dale farm scum, they 'Selectively' jig from one side of the legal line to the other, depending on which side suits them best on that particular day.

Lets play on an even field for starters, and then worry about the small print...

It's an awkward item

On one hand most moderate folk would want to be fair to all comers, but this quote (from the initial link got me wondering:-

What is being done to help these boaters to find a suitable location?

Are these boats only there because the people on them are homeless and need help?

If these boaters are river gypsies they have every right to live and moor on the Thames and its the Council's responsibility to find them locations to do this.

So travellers have more rights than the rest of the population? ?uh? that really sticks in my craw.

and this one:-

Fishermen claimed dozens of vessels had moored regularly without authorisation between Teddington and Staines, depriving anglers of their enjoyment of the Thames.

The same applies to fisherman.....

I suppose folks have the right to choose their lifestyle, but they are subject to the same rules as everyone else. There are many liveaboards on the River and most (?) tuck themselves away and control their belongings. However some delight in being objectionable - and that's unreasonable.

I was going to say "Here, Here" to John (above), but he spoilt it by calling the Dale Farm mob "scum", thus devaluing his post.
Some things should be silent like P in bath.

edit: I just noticed this gem in the article:-
But no affordable housing at Twickenham station shows they don't care about the ordinary man on the street.

Not only house me, but near the station as a right....

True Blue,

There is a major development planned around Twickenham Station, not only the station itself but also the former Royal Mail sorting office site and possibly Heatham House Youth Centre.

I believe the comment in the article refers to the possible lack of affordable / social housing in the scheme....

Yes, so I've noticed.
The problem is that quite often if folks choose words that are seen by others as inflammatory it completely destroys your message - defeating your object.

(This is a general comment and not just directed at you).

It's very, very difficult to find the right word; strong enough to make a point, but not so strong that people take exception. I sit at my computer and agonise about getting it right and often don't. I suspect that many here are more up-to-date with them thar new fangled i-whatsits. Inventions of the Devil, no real opportunity to rescan what's been said?

I'm told face to face you're a very nice bloke - almost butter wouldn't melt - so I look forward to meeting you. Your keyboard persona doesn't quite match....

Coming back to the question, I suppose that "rabble" might fit or "disconnected from society". Neither really work, though.

Ho, hum, onward and upward.

Lunchtime.

We do have many small boatyards down here which do quietly accomodate the sort of chap and chappess( or other) who chose to live aboard a small boat for whatever reason.
One boatyard in fact is right next door to where we moor and have come to know several of the owners very well indeed.
There are several proper residential marinas as well on the Medway as well as places which are a bit of both and of course a couple of big posh marinas to complete the picture.
In fact just about every sort of boater is catered for down here from rowers to ex commercial stuff converted into unusual homes.
There will always be those who choose to live a different way of life from the rest of us and good luck to them.
Perhaps its because we have a bit more room to move down here ?
