Now I read it all , In todays Express Richard has written about his Ship to shore walkie talkies ( which sound like hand held VHF to me as he can access channel 16)and how he can use it on his cliff top walks. Whats the point in paying licence fees if peole use marine vhf on shore I thought this was illegal. Lets hope that ofcom collect his fee soom.

Every member of this forum should write to Richard Madely at The Daily Express, 245 Blackfriars Road, SE1 9UX. informing him of the error of his ways. (or at channel 4 where his email address is, I think, randj@channel4.com)

In his column in todays Express he tells us he has impulsively bought two "powerful ship-to-shore walkie-talkies" having coveted one bought by a friend who lives by the sea in Cornwall. He tells us that he and Judy can now talk to each other if he goes out on a boat or on cliff-top walks, in an area in which mobile phones don't work, and she stays at home. He can also talk to his friend. He goes on to tell how he contacted the coastguard to initiate the rescue of two persons being swept out to sea in a small dinghy and how he subsequently guided the inshore lifeboat to the casualty. He tells us of the a satisfying 10 minutes or so saying things like "over", "do you receive?", "Roger" and "wilco".

Although no one could be criticsed for raising the alarm in an emergency in this way it is clear that Mr. Madely is ignorant of the regulations concerning the use of Marine radio equipment and its licensing requirements or the requirement for an operators licence. He should be encouraged to look at alternatve mobile phone operators and portable 2-way radios operating on the CB frequencies.

If there had been no mention of this in the media, I would probably have just shrugged my shoulders and got on with life. However, Channel 16 can be bad enough in the solent without the addition of untrained mis-users. Agree that he should be made aware of his misdemeanours, but reckon that at single email to him would probably do the trick. Be my guest!

Not to mention the "trained" mis-users/forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Hardly as offensive as the constant radio checks though? (IMHO)

Thread getting a bit "Frank Doberman"ish too...

If Richard Medley was to come round my gaff with his walkie talkie on Channel 16 I should say "Oi! Richard! NOOOOO !"

<hr width=100% size=1>remember....
"common sense 'aint so common"

One of the good things about Channel 16 was that it used to be free of Richard and Judy. What next, "Trisha" or Kilroy? I doubt if a TV personality has to worry about licensing. That's for ordinary people. Richard & Judy were permitted a police escort along the motorway hard shoulder if caught in a traffic jam that would make them late for their show.
