On a welded aluminium cruising yacht, if you can tell where the ribs are because the skin has formed flats, or even gone slightly concave between them; is this a serious concern? Only applies on fwd underwater sections. Max hollow quarter inch in 2 foot run of skin measured fwd & aft between ribs.

If it is serious can you do anything about it ?

Thanks

This was quite commom on the general cargo ships I sailed on as a deck officer in my previuos career. It is pounding damage caused when bashing ones way through a head sea. I would suggest that this is normal on an aluminium hull that may have been pushed hard at times. The 'ribs' are frames.

Can also be due to too much weld on the inside. The weld shrinks on either side of the frame, pulling the plate into a dented shape.

Is it a problem?
Unlikely, but it's not very pretty.

Regards

Richard.
