I will need at some time in the near future to replace a couple of ribs on my "pinnace"
Having not reserarched this yet, i was wondering if anyone had any words of warning or advice for me

Can i replace and fix from inside or do i need to haul to sort out the fixings from the outside?

Could get yourself some useful info from the British Military Powerboat Trust as restoring that kind of thing is right up there street. Try this http://bmpt.org.uk to contact via email. Good luck.

I replaced ribs on my clinker boat a few years back. I found an article by a shipwright which said not to overdo the steaming, or the timber becomes less flexible. I foget the exact times, I think he said only steam for 20 minutes per 1/2" thickness, and this turned out to be true. I think you would definately need to haul out, as when doing the riveting, someone standing on the outside has to hold something very firmly against the nail head, while the person inside uses a ball pein hammer in the nail end, over the rivet. This is by far the most hard and tedious part of the job.
