Hi, I am in the process of repairing a couple of cracked ribs by laminating in new wood but as the planks are rivited to the ribs I am having dificulty finding fasteners, wanted to use silicone bronze, but can only find ringshank type nails.Does anybody know a supplier of plain shank s/bronze?

Your friendly local chandler probably has them as well. If you only want a handfull, it's worth the convenience of going there - can see what you are buying (probably get some advice too!). Yes they will probably cost twice as much, but still only pence.

Yes they all sell nails, but what I was after was plain s/bronze. Following advice this seems the best stuff to use.
Used ring nails often in building houses and they are great unless you want to take things apart, the heads usually pull off before the nail comes out. I wonder what will happen to boats that have been planked with ringshanks when it comes to re-fastening time? I only need a small ammount so will get ring nails and 'adjust' them on the sander.
thanks for the suggestions.

I would imagine that you would have to replace all the ribs too coz the nails wouldn't come out.

I have a feeling that your advisor has got confused between bronze and copper. I don't think I have ever seen, or heard of, silicon bronze nails and the only nail for plank fastening is copper (clenched or roved).

Doh, that's the problem with having a crap memory. I've got a box of them in the wheelhouse, but they are for tingles.

I am the least experienced here on this forum, but the one thing that I'm convinced of is that the vast majority of all fastenings in a re-build needs to be able to be removed. In house construction, you build a frame with right-angles and secure it using a nail gun. It is not going anywhere.

In a boat, there are hardly any right-angles so often you need to offer up and secure a number of times before the task is finished (more so with me coz I'm crap and still a novice /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif).

Of course, as my brain wakes up, I realise that the above is nothing to do with why you wouldn't use gripfast nails to secure planking. They either would not come out when you needed them to or would spring the plank when stress was put on the hull.

Come on guys, bail me out here! My brain hurts! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
