Hi

Can any one advise on fitting a rev counter.

Engine is a volvo MD 7B it runs fine very quiet and have had noprobs with it even though it must be almost 30 years old.

Thanks

John

I use a push bike speedo. Sensor fitted to front pulley. Speedo set to 24 inch wheel and Kph. Gives RPM but out by one decimal place. 1000 rpm shows as 100. Battery lasts about 3 years, not as long as on a bike if your boat is on a mooring and boats movement starts it up.

Check that your alternator has a W terminal

I just bought a tiny tach. Not fitted it yet. If it does what it says it'll be great - and I have no reason to believe it won't.
It works by clamping on to an injector tube and feeling the diminution in diameter when it squirts. Gives hours run and revs. Has the ability to set alarms for service due (several) and max revs.

My reason for buying it was to get accurate hours run. Present hours meter records when the power is on to the engine, and I often forget to switch it off even when I've stopped the engine.

Will let you know how I get on with it. It looks dead easy to fit.

Thanks Vics.

It isn't the original this one has 3 connection points and i assume the unused one will be the W terminal?

Just one comment about the Tiny Tach. You will note it says update every 2.5 seconds. You will find in practice that 2.5 seconds is a long time as you wait for a new reading. Especially as you accelerate the engine. It certainly won't show up fluctuations. This is typical of most digital readout devices.
Note also that most tachs have to be calibrated ie adjusted to allow for alternator pulley sizes if it runs off W or Aux terminal.
