The rev counter on my Volvo MD17 c was not working when I started the engine yesterday.Am I right in thinking this could be due to the alternater not charging?I didn't check at the time since it was a quick visit to check something else.

On my MD11c (a similar engine to the MD17c) the rev counter was driven by a grey lead with 2 contacts from a sensor on the side of the engine not the alternator. If its the same on your engine, its worth checking whether the lead has fallen off or corroded.

Just checked on my workshop manual for the MD11c. It is also for the MD17c and d! The wiring diagram on p29 shows item 13 as an engine speed sensor wired by a pair of grey wires to contacts G and W on the back of the rev counter. If I remember correctly they do not matter which way round. The engine photo on p3 shows item 8 as the engine speed sensor. It is located on the air filter side of the enging towards the rear just above whare the mounting bracket bolts onto to engine.

The workshop manual can be downloaded from Bluemoment at http://www.bluemoment.com/manuals/VolvoMD11C_D_17C_D.pdf

Thanks a lot,I'll look later in the week.Probably knocked it off with the jobs I have been doing around the engine recently.

Have you given it a ye olde 'THUMP' yet? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Seriously though, it'll probably just be the needle sticking or a wire fallen off (as others have said).

Thanks everyone,it's OK now.I went and checked wires as suggested and although nothing seemed wrong it must have been a bad contact.I have been changing the Impeller and a few other jobs around the engine bay so I guess I slightly dislodged a wire. Also a bit damp in there so I have left a fan heater going for a while to dry things out a bit.
