i was out on my tender today and was thinking if i came off the back the engine would still keep going as it only has a stop button. is it possible to fit a kill cord of some sort so it stops if i take a swim

regards nick

It would be a lot of hassle to replace the 'normally open' stop switch, you could put a kill switch in parallel to it.
As it is only a 2hp, so no real grunt, an easier option is to have a loop in the end of the painter over your wrist, or a separate rope with a loop in made off somewhere near the stern.
Then if you fall in the dingy won't sail off into the sunset!

Only problem to that is you would still be very close to an outboard motor's prop which was whizzing about ..... pretty uncontrolably. What would you do then?

I put a replacement switch on our 4hp yamaha so that the kids could drive it. The switch had a kill cord function as well as a stop function ( by pressing the button) which is fairly standard. IIRC it was about £20.

Our (now old) Johnson 3.3 came with just a push button to kill the engine. I sourced from an outboard repairer a kill switch and cord, removed the old switch (it only grounds out the ignition) and replaced it with the new kill cord one.

i'll call into the local chandlers at the weekend and see what they have or maybe browse ebay. at least i know it can be done.
thanks for the help

We are talking 2hp on a dingy here, not 20!
You hold the dingy, move yourself along the side then reach over from the side and press the stop button.
When it happened to me /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I didn't bother to stop the engine, just heaved myself back in to the inflatable!

Sorry, but I think that is one of the most dangerous ideas that I have ever seen being seriously proposed on this forum. Tying yourself on with the painter could easily mean you get dragged right into the prop. It may only be 2HP but it could still do serious harm.

Killchord was handy when we fired up the outboard for the first time this season - throttle got stuck open and the engine raced (it was on a stand in the shed so not going anywhere!) - first reaction after finding the throttle control was US - pull the killchord ... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
We don't bother with it in the solid tender, but in the inflatable where we're more likely to take a dip I do attach it .
