just to update those that helped and those who might find it useful, re-garmin connecting to laptop, you were quite right, garimin sends it's own protocol down the usb lead so it wont work with other programs, but thanks to a tip on here i was able to download some software that creates virtual ports, seems to create as many as you like, and joy of joys finally got it all up and running, the software came from franson, and is called gpsgate, not sure how to post a link in here but I'm sure it'll show up in google, thanks again chaps.
