Hi folks,
I'm taking my wife (careful to be pc after recent thread!) to the Isle of Wight next Wednesday for her birthday and wondered if anyone could recomend a restaurant for lunch. I'd prefer one with a sea/harbour view if possible.

We used to go to Baywatch On The Beach at Bembridge when mooring there but would like something different and dare I say slightly more special?

Thanks,

Mike

We had a lovely dinner at Forrester's Bistro in Yarmouth back in June, no view of the water but lovely food and good service.

Perhaps try one of the yacht clubs, Royal Corinthian in Cowes or Royal Solent in Yarmouth, both lovely with sea views.

The Little Gloster in Gurnard - it has only been open a couple of months. Fresh seafood (the dressed crab is excellent), a fantastic view of the Solent and very reasonably priced. It is best to book in advance, especially in the evening. I have been 3 times now and certainly intend to go back soon.

Went to an interesting little Portugeuse restaurant last weekend just off the chain ferry in Cowes, Manuels' on Shephards Wharf. Good food and an excellent ambience helped along by a very nicely equipped waitress. She introduced us to a Portuguese liquor, Bierao I think it's called. A bit like Drambuie. Very moorish, well the first bottle was, don't remember much after that. Think the bill was £160 ish for four of us so not overly expensive.

Not a real harbour view but you can see a bit of the Red Funnel ferry coming in and out.

Worth going to, I'd go again if only for the waitress. Just found the bill in my wallet, tel 01983 299 566

Island Sailing Club has excellent views from terrace or restaurant non members welcome

Lugleys of Cowes on the Parade in Cowes? Not eaten there myself but their Newport restaurant has a good reputation. If you decide on the IS Club, book a table in the conservatory for the best views.

Does it have to be on the island if a boat is involved? I am thinking of The Ferry Restaurant at the top of the Hamble. Dining on the water in a converted barge type boat. Excellent food. Berth at Moody's.

Excellent, thanks all! I may have to go back a few times to try 'em all out.

Now shall I show all the posts to her ladyshipor shall I pick one myself.....?

Mike

I would add another shout out for Forresters in Yarmouth.

It's just past the Police station where the upstairs Art Gallery used to be. Just like the River Rat in Hamble village you can enjoy your meal safe in the knowledge that both front of house and the kitchen will look after you in a really easy going way. Everyone knows what they're doing and you won't suffer at the hands of some kid trying to pay off the HP on their Peugeot Speedfight 3 with aftermarket micron lawbreaker 7000 exhaust.

The chef at the Forresters, John is great. He magic’s up a restaurant's worth of grub without even breaking into a sweat. Apparently it's all in the prep. Maybe but enough get it wrong for me to think there's a little something he's not telling us ;)

Anyway give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Henry :)

Yep, we've eaten there a couple of times in last month and it was good. The maitre d' is a pleasant lady (Amanda I think) who lives with, but is not married to, John the chef... we had a chat while SWMBO was away from the table and I think I touched on a sore point...

The Blue Crab opposite is unpretentious, but served up a very generous seafood platter.

Salties near the ferry does a good fish and chips in noisy surroundings.

On The Rocks is probably the best option if you like red meat, we've given it a miss recently only because we've been so often.

Haven't tried the George yet, but heard it is OK.

All in all, Yarmouth doesn't do badly in the food stakes (steaks?) for such a small place. We're eating there tomorrow night as the first stop in a trip west, weather permitting.

Have you actually eaten there - I am thinking of booking that one evening after the Goodwood Revival up the road?

Menu was ok but have not found anyone yet that has actually been there to eat.

We ate there earlier in the year. If I recall the senior team at Mendez Marine were there as well (both of them!). It's perfectly OK, not meaning to damn with faint praise, acceptably average. The location isn't that attractive at low tide, being an old steel hull chained to the muddy bank of a boat yard. I'm not sure you can get to it in a dinghy from Swanwick without going through a boatyard gate that needs a code.

The owners were friendly and the service was good.
