Despite countless visits to Cherbourg we have not found a restaurant that is good in all respects. We found one that was great first visit, went back and it was hopeless. Can anyone recommend a consistently good restaurant in Cherbourg - there must be one in a town that size!

Michelin

michelin's red french guides are easily the most knowledegable, complete and unbiased arbiter of restaurants, and it is widely said that no other country's restaurants are so comprehensively reviewed as those throughout France are by Michelin.

The michelin should be up to date and er my copy is on the boat but a 2002 guide lists the Cafe de Paris, which i went to and it was pretty good. Incidentally, it was quiet in the town, and neighbouring restaurants were empty - but the cafe de paris was busy. Also listed is Vauban and Pommier, very near but just back from the quay in a square but i haven't been.

Of course, the downside to a restaurant being giood is that the costs go up.

Note that Michelin rates "comfort" with a number of "knives and forks" symbols but these are no indication of the food on the plate.

There are only 4 levels of food quality according to Michelin: a listing, one star, two stars or three stars. I always try and find new listings by comparing a current and previous Michelin - the new kids on the block are always the keenest.

Does Michelin matter? Yep, to the extent that an Michelin "court" hears as many as 30,000 appeals every year.

Have not been there for a few years but try the "Grande Gousier" 21 rue de l'abbaye Tel 0233531943 A small family restaurant good standards. Go straight out of Marina 10 pin bowling entrance and across the main road. At junction turn right (going out of town) 5 min walk along on the left.

Me too, that makes 4, always excellent.

In addition, for a good French lunch, 'Au bout de la Monde' - take a left off the square opposite the marina, was also excellent - full of locals, which is a good sign.

Ok here's our chose from list!

Grand Gousier - pricey if you get carried away but excellent, good special occasion choice.

L'Aigue marine - I think it changed hands late last year, not as good as usual, different menu but still OK.

Cafe De Paris - Good but too small portions sometimes.

La Ciboulette - excellent and cheap but limited menu

La Regence - good but the menu has been the same for years and we got bored.

Le Vauban - good, pricey often fully booked and not always open every day.

Otherwise Chez Nous is very good for lateral thinkers, ie eat on board but spend a 'restaurant' amount on the ingredients! We like shellfish so can go to town on lobster, langoustines, prawns in all sizes/colours etc, all precooked from the hypermarket plus a salad so no cooking and a really good bottle of wine, all cost less than an average meal out. Still have dishes to wash but I suppose paper plates (ugh) are an option.

Here is another

'Au Tire-Bouchon' lies across the car park in a small street behind Cafe de Paris and Restaurant Vauban
Its not fancy but we had some good evenings there - non smoking is downstairs and likely to be full of English, upstairs is more lively. Good wine list

I'd heard that one recommended too. There is also a Spanish Tapas one around there I want to try as well.

There used to be several others we really liked over the years but each one eventually closed down, we thought it might have been our influence! (L'Albatros, Le Grand Cerf, Petit Cerf, Les Diablotins and another I cannot remember in the square behind the church that did hot plate DIY meals a la Japanese style. Surprisingly Cherbourg seems to have trouble supporting multiple restasurants despite the British invasions, maybe the locals are all into Pizzas and McDonalds and they cannot survive the off season without us!

For the benefit of others see the Cherbourg list here too
