respect to the 93 year old who has just been rescued after capsizing dinghy

+1

Great to see he is still enjoying the sport at 93.

The dinghy looks a little short of buoyancy for my taste!

The alarm was only raised when the crew of a fishing boat spotted the 93-year-old sailor and his dinghy, which was being washed ashore.

The fishermen radioed the UK Coastguard for help, and the Hayling Island RNLI Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat was launched.

Why didn't the fisherman try and recover the sailor (as well as calling the CG)? I think that's what I would have done.

The sailor who left his dinghy in the Cromarty Firth a couple of weeks ago was not so lucky.

They may well have been doing that, but if they spotted the difficulties from some way off the RNLI could have got there quicker. Also possible the gent was in water too shallow for the fishing vessel to safely enter as it's not stated what size the fishing vessel was.

All in all a good result and no doubt the crew of the fishing vessel had nothing but the welfare of the gent on their minds.

I heard bits of this one going on. Didn't get the full picture, but it sounded to me like they had got the guy into their boat but were worried about his health and wanted the RNLI to get him ashore quicker than they would be able to. For "fishing vessel", read "small open angling boat". They also seemed to have some issue with manoeuvring; not sure exactly what but the Coastguard was suggesting they might anchor to hold position and they were reluctant for some reason I didn't catch.

Sorry I was not trying to criticise the fishing boat, more the way it was reported.

I would hope any sailor, regardless of what boat they are in, would call for professional help and also try within their means to help another stricken sailor. That obviously does not include putting their own life or vessel in danger.

Very glad in this case the sailor survived.
