Most inland water reservoirs seem to be taken over by exclusive sailing clubs who have a monopoly on their use. Day visitors can only sail on them if they belong to another club, have formal RYA qualifications happen to own a boat acceptable to the club, and then there is of course a fee. Even some of the water companies I spoke to who own a reservoir shake in their boots when the local sailing club is mentioned.

Apart from the north side of Rutland water which is a long way away, is there any other reservoir in the southern half of this country which is open to the rest of us mortal day visitors wishing to sail for a daily fee? Compare that to Poole harbour where you can launch and sail absolutely free of charge or from a ramp for a minimal fee (as long as you do not exceed 10 knots according to the harbour master...)

Grafham Water near Huntingdon is accessible to public day sailing, for 363 days a year, on payment of a fee. Launching is at the sailing club in Perry (Grafham Water Sailing Club), west at Buckdon on the A1. Only restriction is proof of third party insurance, which can be purchased for the day if not held. All dinghies, including Sidney Harbour skiffs, and catamarans up to 20 feet are allowed.
