I have just heard about a guy being rescued from steep Holm. Apparently he he had been drinking before he took his speedboat out for a spin. Anyone know where he is from?

I spotted the helicopter using its search light on the way back from Bristol Sunday nioght. Apparently the guy had been boozing Saturday night then took the boat out (12 ft speedboat) early Sunday morning from Uphill Weston Super Mare.

When he didnt return a search kicked off with several coastguard teams lifeboats and the helicopter. He swam across to Steepholme and managed to light a fire .

Alledgedly he didnt have any flares phone or radio ,when the engine broke down he was in the pooh. Unfortunately incidents like this reflect badly on all us boat users not to mention the massive cost of a search operation. web page

I am amazed that there is a deserted island in the Bristol Channel. Is there a water supply? Can I maroon myself there from the world?

This is the landing beach. The rest of the foreshore is rocky. The derelict building you can see is an old hotel from Victorian times I think. There was also a gun emplacement on the island at one time.

The tide rips around the Island he was very lucky not to get swept away.

Wish it had been me... i was working Saturday but booze and a helicopter ride sounds much better /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I still recon it was "Sneddon".

Fast boat, Beer, near where he lives.

He just swam in the wrong direction to get home to Clevedon, but he had too much beer and still thought he lived in Wales.

It all adds up ! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

So what is wrong with going on the lash the night before going boating? must admit having no safety kit was a bit stupid though.

There's another one who's learned the lesson the hard way. Luckily for him, and for his family, he came through it. Lucky man.

Pretty good going to start a fire, presumably he had next to nothing with him, and that was all wet anyway?

Maybe he could have broken into the tea shop on top, and made himself a cup of tea and pinched some biccies.

BTW Steepholm is a weird place to visit. The spit where you can anchor (close to the landing beach) falls off quite rapidly, and as the tide rises the current switches all over the place. If I was going to stay for more than a few minutes I would put anchors fore and aft next time. Also, just near the corner NW of the beach an eddy develops, and you can sit quietly there for a while, as the tide rips and swirls a few yards away

The tides sure are swift through the gap in the middle, never tire of going around there though, must try a landing one day.

"Who!" ...... very good, but it definately wasn't me (appologies to Shaggy!)
