Someone has been rescued racing solo off South Africa. I assume that this is on the 5 Oceans. Any idea who it is?

It seems to be Alex Thomson who had keel failure. Bad luck.

I have met Alex Thomson a couple of times and he doesn't strike me as the sort of person to sit around doing nothing but if that's the rule he has to stick to it. Presumably he is not allowed to make a meal, wash up or even give advice without risk of disqualifying his rescuer? What does it say in the Race Rules?
Anyway, it's very excellent news that he's been safely rescued.

When this has happened before the line taken has been that the rescued skipper shouldn't handsteer for hours, or trim sails, but nobody expects them to sit on deck and watch a squall hit without saying "er, Mike, you might want to look at this....."

HB's home mooring at Haslar over the summer was just a few yards from Lutine. I have to say I am very sad that she is most likely lost, we'll miss having her there.

More Bad News
Have just had a look at Mike Goldings website. Disaster has struck and his mast has broken. Rotten luck. They are still able to sail it would seem. looks as though race is over for Mike and he and Alex will just have a cruise to Cape Town. Let's hope they can get there safely...
