Having a jolly time at the Istanbul show, actually very surprized at the professionalism and overall quality of the show in what is only its second year at this new Marina in Pendik. Might be a small affair compared to Genoa , Dusseldorf etc but numbers attending would put SIBS to shame, absolutely stuffed to the doors today. Seems plently of money floating about too, reports of some large mobo sales in the last couple of days.

Haven't quite got used to the coffee though, wow! talk about strong :-) I could strip the doors of paint with it .

Have to say some very strange looking mobos on show from local builders, definitely am aquired taste. Brit builders a bit thin on the ground but big showing from Azimut, Sessa, Ferretti group et al.

Cheerio for now, hope you all having nice weekend afloat (weather permitting of course).

Ah, wondered if there was anyone else around..... I was there Thursday and it was quite busy too. Turkey has not suffered as most economies have over the past couple of years and there is certainly plenty of money around with banks happy to lend, even if the rates are extortionate.

I thought Azimut had gone OTT with their stand for what is a fairly small boat show, then found out it was their permanent Istanbul sales office, right in the middle of the marina! Wonder if they were charged extra during the show?

Off to FLIBS on Wednesday for an experience at the other end of the boat show scale.

Thanks for the good compliments.
In Istanbul there is two big competitor exhibition firms. One does the boat show at Pendik marina in october and one since many years in february at Yeşilköy near the airport.
I was also there at the weekend. We are selling my father's 2004 Searay 395DA but not got desired quote yet.
Since there is a big stagnation in the USA econmy it is cheap to import US made boats to Turkey. Also in same range/scale boats always US are cheaper then Europeans.
If you'd started this thread a few days ago, I would like to meet with you and take a sea tour to introduce my city and where I boat.
Best regards.

Hello Melida , great to hear from you, unfortunately I am back in the UK today but would have loved to take you up on your very kind offer. I will be back in January delivering a new ORY 80 so perhaps we can catch up then ?.

Yes you are correct re American boats in Turkey, business is very brisk and even our brokerage dept is busy with Exports.

I noticed at the show that nearly all the yachts in Turkey are registered in Delaware USA, is that a tax thing, I guess so.

Thanks for posting

I boat year round and I dock it Kalamış marina, at the same shore line near to Bosphorus side. Please call me or pm when you come next.

The most choosen and imported brand is Searay. Since its the most sold boat in USA and a standart setting brand.

Until last year boats with engine are taxed by their HP. Untill 9,9 hp no tax or a dinghy motor on a yacht with more than 9,9Hp is/was tax free. But in a boat/speed boat/cruiser/motor yacht what ever has engine bigger than 9,9Hp due to high taxes. As we cruiser/motor yacht owner are subject to the tax slice 150+ hp. Which is 75Liras per Hp. So my boat has single 285Hp means 285x75=21375Liras=15265USD.

So everyone registers their boat to Delaware. Pay 2500-4000 $ for registering a new firm and transferring the boat if its second hand or invoicing a brand new one. And 500$ yearly fee.

So last year government realized to USA is collecting tax from Turkish boats :D. They changed the rules and instead of taxing by HP started to tax by LOA. So until 9 meters 200Liras yearly, 9-11 meters 400Liras and so on. My boat is also registered to Delaware and dont think to convert it to Turkish flag which will cost me 8-10,000liras =5715-7140USD and than I'm gonna pay 400Liras=285$ b**ls***t.

So USA flag= Tax free boating.
