Replacing winches and 'oles

Am fitting 'newer' winches and have 5 new 'oles to drill and 6 old 'oles to fill. I'll be mounting an oversized backing pad - likely 15mm ply/epoxy coated - with a 5mm alu plate acting as a load-spreading 'washer'.

Any thoughts, don't do's and better ideas....?

When I did this I cleared the old holes using a drill with a drill bit. Taped the underside of the old holes and filled them with thickened epoxy.

Last winter I went up a winch size and did not fancy drilling new holes, so I made transfer plates:



You can see one under the winch. Basically you bolt the plate to the boat using the original holes and then screw the winch on via tapped holes in the new plates. It means that when I am dead and someone decides to fit self tailing winches they will bless me, maybe.
