I would like to update the valves on my Avon. They are the original style, with the deflation pins attached to the valve cover - not the 'in-valve' rotating variety that came later. Has anbody any advice or guidance on setting about it?

Thank you

Julian

It's an easy enough job to do yourself. Your local chandlery will sell a variety of valve styles, choose the type you want and also buy a HYPALON repair kit (or the material and glue separately). A few ordinary tools, pliers, sharp knife, rasp, sandpaper and you're all set.
Peel, tear, shave, abrade the old valves off to leave round holes in the tubes with none of the valve patch remaining. Cut circular patches from your new material with the outer diameter as large as the material will allow and the inner diameter as small as you can get the internal screw-on ring through, and glue into position following the repair kit instructions. Leave to set to the same recommendations and assemble valve. Inflate.
It can be done with the valve assembled to the patch before glueing but it's harder to get a tidy job.
Might also be worthwhile masking off the glue area if you want a tidy finish.
My first replacement valve attempt is a bit untidy but has not leaked. The second is just fine. Still to do the one on the thwart.
