Foam in our saloon is now, at 34 years old, in need of replacement - we are effectively sitting on wood (no - not that kind...)

Errm - nearly fell off my perch when told how much foam seems to cost these days.

Can anyone advise on suppliers or let on if they managed to get the job done for less than the price of a small horse? If so, how?

Quite right - silly comparison. Here on Dartmoor you can pick them up for a few quid after the round-up. I suspect you'd pay more in the hame cainties...

OK - change 'horse' to 'house'.

One guy says he can do the four seat pads (foam only - the cheaper, speckledy kind) for 'only' £150. :hororr:

Small horse ... pony... £25 .... youd be lucky

You dont say what size these pads are or their thickness or what type of foam or what grade

Check:
Hawke House http://www.hawkehouse.co.uk/upholstery-curtain/foam.html

Toomer and Hayter http://www.toomerandhayter.co.uk/products/?cat=58

"Foam for Comfort" http://www.foamforcomfort.co.uk/

You could also try searching ebay. You be bound to find stuff dirt cheap there somewhere

I'm buying foam for the yacht I am building right now - "V" berth (5in High density), small main cabin berth (4in HD) and two seat main cabin settee (3in bottom, 2in back). The total cost just for the foam is $A1057 !!. ( Then I have to make the seats around the main cabin table and aft cabin double berth......)

it looks like an 8' x 4' x 3" sheet of basic firm foam is over £100. what about adding a 1" supplement to your existing foam?

i have a similar dilema and am thinking of doing the that.
unfortunately the cussions are sodden so i cant determine the life in the foam.

my idea is to use the existing foam as a template to cut out the shape in some 5mm exterior ply which i shall epoxy prime and finish in acrylic. then i intend to cover the original and new foam in a vinyl leatherette by simply folding over and gluing and stapling with stainless staples to the underside of the ply.

That "cheaper, speckledy kind" is reconstituted and maximum-firm foam. I'd use it, under memory-foam, for all bunk-cushions.

With unbroken Dartmoor pony colts going for £18, I'm not surprised your cost-concepts are challenged. Wholesale foam prices are >£400/m3.

Try getting offcuts from a bedding manufacturer - you'll have to cut it yourself. It's quite easy to stick bits of offcut together with spray adhesive.

My parents have pronounced themselves impressed with SEWtrim in Southampton. He mostly does bus refurbs, so there shouldn't be too much "yacht tax" involved.

Or...
Wait for Lidl to stock foam matresses.
Purchase same and an electric bread knife.
Remove mattress cover and cut to shape with the bread knife. Use old covers or make new ones.

Just did half my cushions with foam from www.efoam.co.uk . I bought squares of foam and used an electric carving knife, mounted so the blade came through a large bit of plywood, to trim them to exact size.
They worked out cheaper than my local upholsterers but there may be cheaper alternatives out there.

I too did the "HOW MUCH!!!!" double take when I first started pricing up new cushions.

I got two 6ft x 24" 5"thick close cell foam cut and delivered through these people for €170 with a 3 day delivery time.

http://www.efoam.ie/

Even though it appears to be an Irish based company the delivery came from the UK.

They have an Irish website and a UK one. All their distribution seems to be done from a UK warehouse.
