Hi all, I wasn't happy with the rear wheel on the last ride out as it felt like the brakes were binding and on checking it further not only was it not spinning as freely as the front wheel but I could hear a slight grinding noise. On closer inspection (taking the hub apart) it's clear there's been water ingress at some point into the cup and cone bearing assembly resulting in the cup pitting. It's buggered.

Halfords have quoted £80 for a replacement wheel which I have ordered but I thought I'd ask if there's a better option than replacing the whole wheel in circumstances such as this

Many Thanks Gary

Yes.... a new hub.

Any decent bike shop should be able to supply one that fits, and make up the wheel and true it up for you.... (excluding Halfords!).... take it to your local bike shop... known throughout the cycling world as your LBS.... if you are keen, you could have a go yourself, but I can tell you from personal experience, that its a LOT harder than it looks!

Gary, if you go to a specialist bike shop, they could rebuild your wheel on a new hub. This will be better quality than the Halfords special, but much more expensive, as they have to spend quite a bit of time building up with spokes etc, then trueing the assembly. So a new wheel is probably the best option.

thanks guys, I'll stick with the Halfords job in that case as I want the bike back on the road asap and the wheel Halfords will supply will be an exact match for the one being replaced.

Yup. But next time get one from the LBS. You'll get better choice and probably one that lasts a bit longer!

My LBS replaced a broken spoke and trued my back wheel last week for about £20. Ok not nearly as much work as re-building the whole wheel I know.

The hub is another one of those places that needs some care and attention (and you thought boats were bad) - bearings get wet, that washes out the grease and then they start rusting and pitting ...

Jetwash may be a good way to clean your bike - but don't direct the jet at your bearings ...
