Hi,

I intend to replace a pair of Lewmar 30 2-speed non-ST winches with a pair of their modern 30ST equivalents.

Has anyone done this and were there any issues ? I learned from Lewmar that the PCD for the mounting screws for the ST winches is 1/32" different, is this likely to be an issue ?

If the new ones won't go on the old studs/screws, then what is the best way to fill the old homes and make new ones ?

Pix of the old style winches attached :

Thanks,

Hi,

I did this a few years back. The mounting holes do not match. The PCD is very slightly different and the radial spacing is different, too. If I remember correctly, the ST model is more irregular and the advice is to position the gears correctly oriented to the direction of the load. In my case, the mounting pad was already pretty thick, so I simply filed out some of the holes and drilled new ones where necessary (filled redundant holes with Isopon, just to stop leaks). Mine are fastened with bolts from beneath. Both winches were fitted in an afternoon.

If you are worried about strength of mounting, I would suggest you get a backing plate made up to go beneath the deck.

Lewmar were most helpful and sent me drawings of the two mountings and the manual covers orientation, etc (download from their website). If you PM me with an email address, I can send you both of these.

Rob.

I replaced my ST30s with ST40s.The ST30s were not original as there were some other filled holes visible when I took the winches off.I managed to use two of the old holes and drilled the remainder.I filled the holes with grp filler and also used sealant underneath.I used penny washers as my Moody has a pad glassed in under the winch area.(Thats what Moody use)I also used sealant under the screws and bedded the winches on a non setting sealant. The previous owner had used a setting Sikaflex and the old winches were a devil to get off

I think it's unlikely that you'll be able to re-use the original mounting bolts without repositioning them. 1/32" is only .7mm so nothing really. What you'll have to do is to offer up the installation template after removing the old winches and either enlarge the existing holes or drill new holes between the old holes. This will depend on the required orientation of the new winches which is important for self tailing winches (but not for non-ST). The existing holes if not required can be filled with gelcoat filler.
Be sure to use substantial backing plates on the new winches as ST30s can generate quite a pull! (20mm marine ply with big washers round the fixings)

When I did this, I found I could reuse 2 holes, but remaining 3 had to be filled and new drilled.

Thanks again for sending those .pdfs, Rob.

Lewmar have the mounting arrangements for the Evo winches on their website and these have the same equi-spaced (72 degrees) mounting holes as the original No 30 non-ST winches that I have so I will go with the Evos rather than the Ocean.

Thanks to all who replied,
