I need to replace the gaiters on my enfield outdrives fitted to a Senior 31. Am replacing the perkins 4107's with vetus 4.17.
Have replaced the gaiters before but have forgotten the sequence of steps. Can anyone help? Have got the Bob Knowles service book but this does not seem to help.

Thanks

Drain the oil, disconnect the steering arm and tie out of the way, stick in reverse so the catch holds the weight better without lifting and breaking your toe, remove the two grub screws from the swivel plate, knock out the two pins either side of the swivel plate (preferably with the drive supported) undo the hose clips securing the gaiter and tilt the drive down so the shaft disengages, chabge gaiter and do the reverse procedure, don't forget to swear like feck while trying to support the drive and re-align the shaft in the cv joint, when you do the hose clips back up check the gaiter hasn't popped out at the bottom as they easily can.
You'd never guess I put my enfields back on this afternoon would you, same hull moulding too, so whats a vetus 4.17 based on?

thanks for the advice,-I remember the hassle of lining up without dropping!!. The vetus is based on a mitsubishi and is approx 42 hp. I'm based in bedford at Priory marina - where do you moor?

Thanks again

Closer than you probably think, I'm in St.Neots on the same river, RLM 31 by my username, I thought the vetus may have been a smaller version of the p4.19 that was based on the peugeot 1.9 engine which is very similar to what I have.

We are at Brierleys, see you about hopefully.
There shouldn't be any real problems mating the engines to enfield outdrives as they are very basic, as long as the engine bearers are somewhere near, I had to rip out and replace mine to get the pug's in but the wood filler was rotten anyway, probably something worth investigating while the engines are out anyway, drill into them and see what grade of wood or mush comes out, theres some piccies of how bad mine were at www.leomagill.co.uk under the 'project puggit' button, could have removed the wood with a teaspoon!
