replacing engines

is this viable....

We want a diesel engine in a 21+ ft cuddy, the only manufacturer we have found is Monterey.

Very nice boat and its on the top of the list by default, simply because of the engine.

Now could one buy a new boat with the lowest engine in the range and get a diesel retro fitted?

Have you had a look at Glastron.

They tend to use diesels. I think the GS249 is about or slightly larger than you are after but may be worth a look.

No doubt it could be done, but you'll drop a bundle on it and I imagine the manufacturers will wash their hands of any warranty obligations. Only worth doing if you are really worried about petrol from a safety viewpoint (you needn't be), to the exclusion of all other considerations, imho. Financially it won't make any sense at all.

As an alternative to the Monterey or the Glastron, Sea Ray offer their 215 and 225 Weekenders with a KAD 32 or D3, so it might be worth talking to Marina Marbella?

If your prepared to go the extra couple of feet you caould look to the Rinker 232, Diesel options avail and from what I know if it it is the proberly one the most underated cuddie sports boats about - Alistairr will confirm!

If you set on the monterey then have a chat wth Dave Allen of Southwater Marine on the diesel options as I tink he is the main monterey man in the south and extremly helpful.

You will struggle at that size although someone does one with the 1.7 Merc unit, but I can't remember who!
As others have said moving up to the 25ft arena starts to get you reasonable options but if you are seriously looking for a trail boat there are few.
I do know of a 2004 Glastron used only a couple of times and kept out of the water that is available with a KAD32.............but nothing in the 21ft range.

Chapparal do or did a 21 foot diesel cuddy, can't remember the model name of it. Tried one a few years back and it rides well.

The Chapparal is the 205SSE. I had a petrol one and it was great. I did extended cruising with it even Poole to Alderney, Gurnsey, and Cherbourg. They are available with the Mercruiser 1.7dti as well. I know of a 2002 for sale for £21,950. You can even sit up and eat in the cuddy!

Regal did the 2150 with a 1.7 Merc.

This has been replaced by the slightly larger (22'?) 2250, which is available with the Volvo D3 I believe

Concur with Makkers, ref Rinker.

Cuddies are great boat, We started with a Fletcher 18' cuddy, used it most weekends the first year, and deceided we wanted something a bit bigger.
We went to Southampton boat show, and then the London Boat show, we looked at every cuddy on the market, including the Monterey, which i think was slightly dearer than the Rinker.
In the end we went for a New Rinker 232 Captiva Cuddy, 23'6 long, but with the extended swim platform LOA is 25', a must, cause i think it makes the boat look fantastic!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. The cuddy is huge, I'm 6'4" tall, and my wife and i slept in it most weekends with our dog. It had everything we needed, a sink with presurized water, trash can, storage for cool box, gas stove and a ski locker big enough for me too lie in!!! In the Cuddy, is plenty of under seat storage, a small wardrobe, portable toilet, and small corner unit.

We spec'ed ours with the Merc 5'0L MPI with Bravo 3, Petrol, we thought about the diesel, but i wanted power, and the running costs of Petrol didn't bother me, and it turned out to be very economical.
Anyway Great boat!! Ask me anything about it, or speak to the Dealer who will welcomely give you a sea trial.

I got rid of it 3 weeks ago, and really really miss it /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.
Had to look at something bigger, SWMBO wanted more space, cause Baby on the way!

Look here for a Diesel one!!!!

perhaps thats somewhere i am going wrong.. I have been checking out details on t'internet and never see any diesel options.

Just had a look at www.rinker.co.uk and it only listed 4 engine options all of which were petrol.

on another note, are there really that good a deal to be had at the boatshows?

There may be this year. Have tried to buy a new boat at boat shows 3 times across numerous suppliers. Only once got a great deal. Other times bought just after boat show and got a better deal as they had not sold as many as expected or had sold lots so were able to get larger supplier discount.

Why buy new though and pay the tax? Most 21ft Cuddies of 1/2 years old will be like new as they generally have very little use.

If you look at that Rinker site, and go to 'Stock Lists', then go to 'New Boats', you will see a couple of 232's listed, one with a Volvo D3, it also says its sold, but click on it, and you will see the price and details of it.
The last time i spoke to them a few weeks ago, they still had a diesel version for sale, although it wasn't listed.

I think there are Deals to be had at boats shows!! Are you a cash buyer??
If so, you can pull all the strings, if you like the boat, bargain all you can, and just walk away, if the dealer isn't playing ball. If you want to finance the boat, fine, definately worth speaking to the Finance companies at the show, as they all other special rates there, also play them off against each other, after all it is a product you are buying off them as well.

In 2003, we went looking for a 1-2 year old Rinker, we viewed a few on the south coast, before going to the London boat show, we spoke to the Rinker dealer, you have the link to, and managed to negociate a deal that made us buy a new boat for the same price as the used ones we had just viewed.

deals at boat shows relative to those availble all year will depend on manufacturer arrangements with the dealer.

generally you will get a deal from a dealer on any boat that is in stock for a period of time, or where a new model has been announced etc unsold boat show models will be great value if you were planning to load up on extras!

equally September or later are good months to make offers to dealers...........but make them to the boss not the sales team!

Don't agree with the first bit, We got a great deal, and the boat was ordered and built to our Spec, only down side was we then had to wait 3months for delivery.

Second bit, Yes, go as to as high as you can, Our recent purchase would not have happened in the Sales manager had got his way, i told him the deal i wanted, he said no way!! Later that day, i spoke to the boss, told him, sorry i can't add to your figures, he said whats the deal i'm after, I told him and he said fine, deal done!!!
