I am replacing the plywood cockpit deck on my Hunter 19.

I have removed the old ply but the frames now have holes where there were the original screws and nails..should I fill thses holes before refitting the new screws and nail (and if so, what with)?

Also, should I use stainless screws and nail or should I procure some special ones - brass? Copper? The decking is 6mm marine ply.

TIA

Difficult to give an accurate answer without seeing the boat, But DON'T use brass screws, they will de-zinctify very quickly in sea water. Better to use Silicon Bronze screws or stainless Gr A4. Fill the old screw holes and you might have to glue & screw battens alongside the top of the frames to take new screws. Alternatively you can use Gripfast nails - silicon bronze barbed ring nails but dont expect to ever remove them, they are in for life! Try Anglia Stainless for best prices Tel 01359 251414.

I would bed the new decks down with a polyurethane (sikaflex) glue, this will fill any holes left over, use A4 stainless or bronze, I prefer bronze, dont use nails, you will get a better more even pressure on the glue with screws. As the previous post, anglia stainless have all you will need in the way of screws. Countersink the holes for the screws, or they will tear the top venerr of the ply, deep enough to allow you to fill the holes woith epoxy filler to seal the screws in, or dip the screws in epoxy as you fit them, if you ver need to remove them, put a soldering iron on the heads for a few minutes and you will be able to unscrew them without problems.

I have just replaced the plywood decks on my Silhouette using 6mm ply. any old screw holes that were to be re-used I drilled out and glued in a bit of 10mm dowel then drilled and screwed into that all other holes I filled with epoxy filler. I glued the deck down with Balcatan(may not be the right way to spell it) a one pac resin that cures by contact with moisture(great for wood)If you are rich then use stainless or bronze screws .I found that 1"copper boat nails worked fine using screws on the most stressed areas as the glue sets it foams and so takes up any gaps costs £12 a bottle I used 4 but also put on a new cabin top. as for brass screws rotting I was able to save and re use over half of my old ones even though they are probably 30years old. contact me if you want any help
