Time for some replacement sails!

Westerley Renown Ketch - probably need a main/mizzen to start and then a furing headsail - the furling gear is quite worn and may be prudent to replace as well!!

Now back in UK (Chichester) for a re-fit - back down to Med via west coast of France in the spring!

Where do i start - any tips for good sailmakers appreciated!!

I am a long time Crusader man, and love their stuff.
However,
I did a sail construction and repair course at Wilkinson Sails in Faversham this year.
It demonstrated some of the finer points of long life cruising sails.
Cindy does a 5 year warranty on her offshore cruising sails. They look bulletproof.

PM wilkinsonsails on this forum if you are interested.....

Sail renewal

I have had sails from Wilkinsons. Cindy came and measured up, delivered on time and they were great sails. Try them but at least get a quote and see the workmanship and quality of materials.

Mine came with the boat and were made by Wilkinson, triple stiched and lots reinforcements. Not sure how many miles they did before i got the boat but 15,000 since then. I'll be going back there again.

NorDac cruising sails from North Sails

We take delivery of a new set of NorDac cruising sails from North Sails on FRIDAY.:):D:)

We looked into all the sail makers/materials/options and finally decided on Norths. From having sails made in China to local sail makers to large lofts. we decided for long term cruising with longevity North Sails was the way to go. IMO the material and cut is as important as the construction if you actually want to do some sailing.:D

They were the most expensive option of all  but in the long term we decided they are worth the investment.:)

I bought my last suit from Crusader. Very good product and after sales service (no pun intended). I live in Chi and have experience of Arun and Batt sales in Bosham. Further afield I've bought sails from Jeckells too. All good.

To go against the grain:

We bought a new main from Lee Sails in Hong Kong, and it's been fine. Sure - if we were sailing in Patagonia or Norway we might want something a bit tougher, possibly three reefs (less essential on a ketch) and certainly leather reinforcing at key points. But we don't - we are staying in the Med/Black/Baltic seas for the foreseeable future. Our shortlist was Gowen (previous sailmaker), local sailmaker where we were in S of France, and Lee. The difference was approximately GBP1000 between Europe and Asia.

Nearer to home: the Gowen sail was excellent and had seen serious service. We've bought good sails from Jeckylls, including our much loved cruising chute. And Arun have also given us very good service. (We have never used Crusader.)
