I want to replace the two mattresses that make up the island double bed in my aft cabin. Any recommendations for companies in the Southampton area? They will need to be bespoke as I guess like many boats they're an bit of an odd shape. Ideally want someone to come to the boat to measure up and discuss/agree the various options available.

I did try a search but got far too many threads to go through, including Jimmy the Builders re-fit thread of 100+ pages :)

Thanks in advance.

Well, to save you the effort of ploughing through my refit thread, I used the Marine Bedding Company, based on a recommendation from another forumite. Perfect pleasant people to deal with, and they did template the mattress etc - but delivery was slow, and now that I've slept on the mattress a few times, I'd have to say that it just isn't that comfy. Their idea of a firm mattress tension is everybody else's medium-soft. I won't use them next time.

Thanks Jimmy, much appreciated.

I have a lower back problem so a good firm mattress I find essential if I'm not to wake up in the mornings feeling that I've aged 20 years. These things don't come cheap so I'd rather go by recommendation although in your case that obviously didn't work!

Millbrook Boat Mattresses are local - anyone used them?

I used Millbrook a couple of years ago and in all very happy, fit was perfect actually a lot better than the original making the bed a few inches wider, comfort is excellent and would definitely use them again, they even took the old mattress away for a smallish charge. If you're even in Lymington you're more than welcome to have look.

I was fortunate that ours takes a standard 5 foot mattress so it cam from John Lewis and is the same one we have at home.

Any way a standard one can be fitted or find someone that can modify the corners?

Depending on the access getting a full sized mattress through the aft cabin door might be a challenge?

This suggestion is not perfect .. but..

With my first boat I bought a decent quality foam mattress. This was per above for reasons of access ( it went round corners very nicely!). It also happened to be a standard size( I was lucky) but of course if not foam can easily be cut.

Custom mattresses seem (a) expensive (b) slow (c) of variable quality. The ones we had on our new boat were simply carp hence thrown away .. and they would have been custom made by someone.

A decent foam cut may give a fair result, fast and in relative terms cheap.

Some bed shops also give a comfort gtee so you could try it at home first and if no good send it back ( pre the hack saw!) .

I recently used Wizard Marine Mattresses in Plymouth to refit a Sunseeker Portofino based in SoF. They are OEM suppliers to Sunseeker and worked from templates that I provided. Very happy with both service and results.

Phoned Millbrook who seemed less than enthusiastic that I wanted to take advantage of the templating serviced offered on their web site. Waiting for them to call back.

DAW - Thanks for suggesting Wizard but Plymouth is a bit of a trek for us as we wanted to check out the best type of bed for us before we ordered.

I suspect that's our fault. They measured it, ballsed it up, made the mattress incorrectly and then expected us to go out of way to resolve it.

We too have recently bought a bespoke spring interior mattress from Wizard Marine Mattresses. The service was first class, took three weeks, they dealt with numerous queries before we finally placed our order and the finished result from our template fits perfectly. I have a back problem and the difference between the old one and the new is fantastic.

We bought a roll of paper tablecloth - needed to tape two bits together for the head end. The interesting thing was that the symmetrical looking frame wasn't, so it was important to mark which way was up, as they don't normally make the mattress reversible. Ours came in two halves, with a vertical velcro join covered by a padded strip. It wouldn't have got through the cabin door in one bit.

We used 1 metre wide brown wrapping paper - wide enough for the singles and taped together for the forward double. Make sure you mark top and bottom sides of each template and label them so you know which one is for which bed.

Thanks Jimmy, much appreciated.

Ours is a Naturalmat Marine pocket sprung which is very firm, we have a 2inch memory foam topper on top and it is bliss!! I also get back pain if we have a soft mattress and with this combo I am fine. We had to change from a memory foam (Tempur) back to a similar set up at home when I realised how much difference it made.

Just to resurrect this thread we did order a new mattress, mattress protector and fitted sheets from Wizard Mattresses (Wizard Fabrics) in Plymouth. We ordered it at the end of last season but for delivery late March in time for the new season.

Really nice people to deal with, nothing was too much trouble and answered numerous questions I had about the mattress and other bits. Arrived very well packaged, fitted better than the original mattress and oh so comfortable. I now sleep better on the boat and wake up with less back problems than I do at home.

Would highly recommend them.
