Hi guys,

Can anyone recommend an online shop where I can get imperial bolts? Specifically I am after 5/16 inch diameter X 3 1/4 inch length in 304 or 316 grade stainless steel.

I am unable to use any other bolt size or drill the hole bigger, I have tried Metric M8 bolts but the diameter is slightly too small.

Are you through bolting with nuts or is there an existing thread you wish to use in a component, if through bolting then just google "5/16 BSF stainless" for a selection, if a component then you will need to identify the thread, though probably BSF.

Through bolting, no existing thread but I want as close a fit as possible because its a through hull fitting below the water line.

Many thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

as a rule of thumg, for threads of the same depth the finer the pitch the more force can be aplied. Not always the case.

5/16" = 7.9375mm. Are you really going to notice the difference, if you are through-bolting something?

They are keel bolts so I would rather the proper size, for purposes of keeping the bilges dry!

Blimey! 5/16" keel bolts? You probably shouldn't be relying on the body of the bolt to provide water tight integrity. It is more normal to use a bedding compound between the two surfaces, which when tightened together, makes the joint watertight.

Yep it's a 14 foot trailer sailor 16 bolts, bilge keels. Yes I'm going to use silkaflex on the keel hull join but it would also make sense to use bolts that were as close to the size of the hole as possible

The post was never about can I use M8 bolts, I put in the original post that I can't/don't want to. I have had some very helpful replys on where I can source imperial bolts, thank you.

Are they steel plate keels? If so would ease the holes to 8mm - as already suggested it is the bedding that provides the seal. However, you should have no problem getting 5/16" - Avon Stainless for example do them in A2, but you might also find galvanised mild steel as well.
