Replacement handheld vhf.

Back to the OP,s question. I bought a floating Cobra earlier this year from the chandlers for under £80. Works well I would recommend. Like the idea of the cigarette charging plug.

Leaving aside the very intresting debate on Magazine Tests, look like the Cobra floating unit is going under the tree.
Anyone know the significance of not haveing EU channels.

There aren't any "EU channels". Cobra handhelds have International channels (which we use here and in Europe) plus USA/Canadian channels.

Perhaps the adverse comments in this thread relate to ICOM radios from years ago. Can any of the earlier posters comment?

Unfortunately the radio and info are aboard in Greece. I don't think mine is a current model, it was bought about seven years ago. However, the XM2000 that I was comparing it with has been obsolete for longer than that.

I have an icom IC-M1EURO V, possibly 5 plus years old. Very little use and the battery holds its charge very well so far. Main boat unit is the icom IC-M423 with command mike by the helm which is why the handheld gets little use. Based upon my experience I would purchase icom again.

It was the radios with a "press and hold" power switch, like the M31, M32, M33, etc. Ones with a proper on/off switch, like the M1 EuroV, don't have the problem.

The two ICOM radios I referred to earlier in this thread are M33s. They hold charge very well, for months at a time.

I think they are about 5 years old.

Maybe there has been a change in spec. Perhaps the newer units have different settings.

After this thread and my experience with a handheld VHF I'm ( just ) beginning to realise why some people now rely on mobile phones in a posh plastic bag !

Treat yourself to a Standard Horizon handheld for Christmas - I guarantee you'll like it!
