I have a ten year old Garmin GPS 45XL which still works, but the screen is failing.
I use it to provide nmea data for a Yeoman Plotter, Tiller Pilot and DSC radio. As the 45XL is no longer produced can anyone recommend a hand held suitable replacement from the Garmin range which can do the same job?

I have had a Garmin 76 for a few years now and still think that its brilliant and the price has come down.

Have a look at the Garmin 72. It's the same as the 76 but a few less bells and whistles and more affordable. That is if your objective is still "just to power the Yeoman".

Else agree the 76 is a great piece of work, I've used one for several years now, still has and does everything I need.

Until recently I used a Garmin 12 for the very same purpose as you, a cheap solution and entirely satisfactorily.

I used a proprietary Garmin cable in addition to draw power from the boat battery which fed the G12 and the Yeoman Sport plotter, and feed NMEA to the Yeoman via a small terminal box with a surge protected internal 5A fuse, so that I wasn't entirely dependant on the unit's AA battery supply

Have you looked at the 'for sale' forum? There is a Garmin 12 for sale. You will, I think, find all the plugs etc that fit your 45xl will fit the 12.

Thanks for your advice. Put in a bid for a GPS 12 on e-bay (very few 72s or 76s). If unsuccessful will look at new 72 - about £100 best price I've found. Again, many thanks for very valuable advice and excellent forum response.
