I've got a Sailspar roller reefing system, can you replace the forestay with the mast up? It would have to be a rigger cos I can't go up a mast and the Jack Russell doesn't have opposable thumbs. Any recommendations for riggers near Tollesbury?

Well, how confident are you? Someone's got to go up the mast to undo the forestay and do it up and you've got to support the mast while the forestay is undone and someone is up there. You can use a halliard for that - what condition are they in and can you get it nice and tight? As I recall fitting my Sailspar all those years ago, we had the mast up and down a couple of times to make sure we were cutting the forestay to the right length. Have you got your Sailspar manual?

From your Bio you have a 27ft boat so not a terrific height to go up. With a small boat the halyards may be quite thin and the winches quite small. So really the question is are they ample enough to haul someone up and down and do you have a spare halyard? If so do it with the mast up.

No problem changing a forestay with the rig up. Sometimes professional riggers won't do thing that way because the rest of the rig is an unknown quantity and if they find any other problems the rig will have to come down anyway.
