I've got a Garmin GPSMap 225 on my boat, details here

It seems that Garmin no longer make the charts for this model (GRR!) so before moving to Croatia I will need a new unit.

It seems that all the reasonably priced units have smaller screens (mine is 150mm diagonal) but often have better resolution.

Can anyone suggest a replacement unit that has the same or better functionality, and will take SS chart cartridges for the Med?

SS chart cartridges?

overall the 225 was a great unit in it's day but today just about any unit will provide a clearer image and faster response times. If I new what an SS chart cartridge was I might be able to respond better.

shame you are heading for Croatia - if you were going to the baltic or holland I could have provided the g charts to keep you going for a bit longer!

I still have a 225 installation but only use it for the navigation screens and to drive the VHF input - even the small 5" Lowrance 3500C screen is simply miles clearer as a chart plotter than the 225 or 215 (have both).
