Hi All,

I used to use a Yamaha Malta 3.3hp longshaft outboard on my Hunter Europa. Bought it some years ago from a forum member in lovely condition and low hours. It was light, always started first pull and pushed the Europa along nicely at hull speed with power to spare.

Unfortunately it was stolen from my shed last year :(

I would love another Malta but they seem to be rare these days. Anybody got suggestions something (secondhand) to replace it with? Lighter the better and with the same or more power ideally.

Thanks,
Jon

Mercury/Mariner/Tohatsu 3.3 or 3.5 two-stroke - millions made and all mechanically identical except for cowling with brand name. Possibly not quite as good an engine as the Yamaha Malta but about the lightest 3+ hp commonly found.

Evinrude 3 or 4 hp two cylinder 2 stroke is pretty light and often for sale at a couple of hundred pounds or so. Lightest version has 360 degree steering and a neutral shift but no reverse. Also may have remote tank facility as well as integral.

Long shafts available too, but less common.

Spares available from Wills Marine Kingsbridge amongst others.

You obviously share the same soft spot for the Malta as I do. Don't give up hope of finding another - I bought one from a forum user earlier this year, also in excellent condition.

Love my Malta and rare as they come....but last I looked there was a rare long shaft on eBay for a reasonable price. One of the later ones I think.
If replacing, you’d likely need to go with a 4hp Merc or yam 2 stroke LS to get the same kind of push. The 3.5 hp Tohat Merc etc have apparently around the same quoted hp, but a smaller cc displacement meaning they don’t feel as grunty
