Hi,
A propshaft flexible coupling has failed on my dad's Colvic 30' yacht.

The coupling looks like a disk of 18mm thick rubber with two 3mm thick metal disks bonded to the rubber. The coupling flanges then bolt to the rubber.

It is about 6.5 inches OD with a PCD of 4.25 inches. It looks like a Metalastik coupling but they no longer seem to make these.

Gearbox is a TMP 2:1 reduction.

Norris Marine can't help, and still awaiting an answer from R&D Marine. Is there anywhere else we can try?

Regards

Bob

Is the PCD the same on both gearbox and prop coupling and are there 4 bolt holes on each of the flanges??

flexible coupling

Hi

The PCD is the same on the gearbox and shaft flange, with three holes on each.

It seems to have relied on the vulcanisation of the 3mm disk to the rubber.. that has lasted many many years. until now!!

I thought I recognised your description......This is a type of coupling used on some early cars. My Austin Seven had one....I mean Austin 7 and not mini

The problem may be getting the 6 hole flexible connection .

There were enquires on here about these some time ago. I shall put on my thinking cap.

Replacement Coupling

Thanks for the suggestions folks.
Not heard back from R&D yet but it looks the best bet... if not the only bet...

TMP simply say that Metalastik no longer make them and recommend changing the complete coupling.. quite a big job with the boat in the water.. big job if its out of the water!!

Plenty of good systems out there.. but a drop in replacement that lasts another 25 years would be great.

Cheers

Bob

I've been there and done that - I found R&D extremely helpful on the phone.

Turned out they couldn't help in my case, 'cos my engine dances about more than their coupling could cope with. Unfortunately the details of the supplier I used are on the boat.
