I have a 1988 Hunter 27TK and she is basically sound but the 1GM10 engine is becoming rather tired.

Her lack of horsepower has always been an issue but now it is becoming a severe problem.

What alternatives do I have ? I'd like to fit a more powerful engine, but am concerned about space and more importantly weight / trim.

Does anyone have any history of fitting alternative engines to a Hunter and if so, what?

Any advice would be appreciated.

A Nanni or Beta 14 is just about identical in footprint and will drop in easily. Engine mounts are a bit higher and further apart fore and aft but overall length, height and width virtually the same apart from being a bit bulkier at the rear for the extra cylinder. Exhaust is on the other side and is a different diameter but easy to link up with your existing water trap and hose. You will need a 3/4" water inlet to replace your current 1/2".

Well worth doing - I have done it in a different boat, for 50% increase in power, quieter, smoother and freshwater cooled. Bit heavier but the engine is fitted to later Hunters so should not affect trim.

I would also recommend Beta - and if required they will make feet to fit your bearers for a little bit extra. I had this done when fitting my 25hp which saved me completely rebuilding the engine bearers.

When was the last time you did a top end overhaul and/or had the pump and injector serviced? The 1GM10 is quite enough to drive your Hunter at hull speed, given a balanced and correctly sized prop. I de-coked my 1GM10, touched in the valves, reset the valve clearances and serviced the fuel pump and injector after ten years service. Boy did it make a difference. I also had to have the prop balanced and a couple of dings taken out by a specialist.

The cost of the Yanmar spares needed was a bit fierce but bite the bullet, it's a lot cheaper than a new engine and the parts are readily available.

Not necessary replacing a 1GM with a 14 apart from a spacer about 30mm thick to raise the face of the bearer. Width is the same but fore and aft spacing different so new holes into existing bearers.
