cheers, I think it may be a marlec lamp I have, I am just after the ballast module as mine is starting to be a pain to turn on.

On these small lamps you can't just change the starter and rather than fork out for a whole unit I am hoping to just change the module. Someone somewhere must carry them?

Have you tried a new tube yet? Quite often the tube gets "tired" and takes more effort to strike. If the electronics are working, then they are probably OK, and maybe the tube.

In normal mains fluoros (I know yours is 12v), with a tube that only glows at the ends when starting, it is the starter that is the problem. If the tube flicks often without striking completely, then it is the tube that requires replacing.

I put a new tube in over winter, it did not improve things much, I was putting it down to the wiring maybe being too lightweight for a longish run, but also taken that out of the running.

I don't like waste, so would rather repair if possible.

I've got ten of the Marlec units in my boat for ten years and the only problem I've had is that the on-off switch is floating. In time the joint to the "logic" board weakens and the unit is intermittent in starting.

Solution - relieve the strain on the switch and resolder.

Could be part of your problem?

I will have a look and check all the joints, but I do believe as the tube tries to strike and then remains dim for up to 30 minutes before fully lighting that the problem is not a poor joint.

But stranger things have happened.

The symptoms you describe are similar to the 2D we had in our previous boat. I took our 2D out, brought it home and put it in the airing cupboard for a few days. After that, it gave a bright light. Maybe there is some damp in the unit. Give it a try in a drying atmosphere for a few days, and try it again.
