A well meaning passer by who was trying to help me get out of a tight spot used a metal ended boat hook to push my stainless steel pulpit rail and I now have a length of scratched railing /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I have heard that sandpaper followed by cutting compound can be used to remove scratches in stainless steel. Has anyone tried this approach?

When I polish stainless I use 120 grit flap wheel in an electric drill followed by 240 then 320 followed by a polishing mos and polishing compound.

If the scrach is nor too deep you couls start with 240 grip

the normal cutting compound will do but it will take a very long time as it is very fine and deaigned to softer materials like paint of GRP gel coat
