Repainting engine block

My volvo 2040 has a couple of spots where paint is coming off - there was a bad water leak now fixed and looks like paint was just slapped on.

Obviously I'll finish off with the Volvo green but and tips on the prep. I think it needs degreasing and something to convert any surface rust to something more stable but best way of doing this?

(And obviously this is not in the nice accessible parts of the engine but will involve me undertaking the marine diesel equivalent of keyhole surgery!! - might practice by painting my bathroom through the neighbours letter box.)

Chip and scrape off any thick build up of rust finally wire brush

Apply a chemical rust remover. I used Jenolite on a friends VP because I had lods.

Repeat until all rust has been removed then paint.

Someone will be along in a minute to recommend a pint which is a good match but a fraction of the price of the grossly overpriced VP paint.

I used Hammerite becuse I had some, my friend did not want to pay VP's price for paint and after all said and done was only an engine.

+ 1 for Hammerite - actually colour match is good to a VP 2003 (1993 vintage) for what its worth!
