I am in the process of refitting my boat (Sadler Seawych) and wondered if anyone could offer a suggestion as to a product to use to stick/bond 3mm plywood panels directly to the inner (rough side) of the glassfibre moulding. This is to finish parts of the interior cabin work, rather than use that awful glue on foam backed vinyl all over the interior.

I had thought of using that 'No More Nails' stuff but wondered if it would suitable for marine applications given the moisture and condensation levels. Or possibly Marine Grade Silicone/Polyurothane?

Hop seomone can help.

Alan

Welcome to the forum.

I refurbished the interior of my Sea Wych 3 years ago as after 23 years the foam backed vinyl lining and the widows, especially the rubbers, were all in need of replacement.

I'll PM a reply to you I think as it may be fairly lenghthy. I'll also let you know how designed the side lockers and what I would do differently if I were to redo those. So keep a lookout for the little flashing icon on the headings bar.

If you are in the solent area I would be only to pleased to let you have a peak at the interior of mine sometime and I can highly recommend membership of the Owners Association for friendship , help, advice and rallies and social events if you are in one of the areas where the Association is active. The web site is http://www.seawych.org

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I am a member of SWOA, but Im located in Northern Ireland which means access to the majority of members and their boats isn't handy.

Ive only bought Sirdana about 5 months ago, and Im dealing with perished window rubbers and leaks as you said.

My boat hasn't been very well finished internally originally, but I want to sheet in round the windows with teak faced ply, fit covered lockers below, then fit back rest cushions too. Ive also ordered the GRP cockpit locker covers from SWOA.

Sourcing items is a problem in Northern Ireland, and shipping costs is a further issue when buying from the mainland.

I would be interested also in where you sourced materials from, as I do need also to replace the headlining.

Be very interested in any information you could send my way, and would love to see pics of the inside of you seawych for inspiration, as my boats now a blank canvas. Ive looked at the photos of the inside of the boat featured on the SWOA Site, and one currently for sale on Ebay.

Thanks for your reply, and hope to hear more soon.
Alan

rather than use the horrible foam backed vinyl, I used a felt backed carpet from carpetright It provides a better insulation, and I think it looks better as well - but then I might be biased!/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

No I really mean felt backed - the foam will degrade in time and become brittle (the more modern fire retardent version, gets brittle more quickly that the older non-PC version). However, the felt backed does not suffer from this drawback. Major problems have been that we installed permanently (due to lack of headroom to make it feasible to do panels) and this makes work on the bits installed there just a bit of a problem! You need to buy the lightest carpet availabel (which is also the cheapest /forums/images/icons/smile.gif and I got my tame carpet fitter to install having done all the prep work ourselves.

Tried no-more-nails to fix in some wood pads under the useless foam-backed vinyl so that I could screw in buttons. It was USELESS. Would not hold at all and even after wedging the pads up for two hours, they fell off when any load was applied (I tried pulling VERY gently).
