I've just seen this you tube video which looks like a good idea for replacing the seal. So long as I am very careful would the engineers be cautioning against? I would of course check for bearing and spindle wear as well. In short, he uses a piece of wire to poke the seal out. He inserts it in the gap between the pump and the gear housing.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" for water pump seals. Only replace if leaking.

However, if yours is leaking then definitely replace them. I haven't watched the video having done probably thousands of these over the years, but if it makes sense to you then go fer it ;-)
 
Mine was leaking horribly a couple of years ago, an engineer in Salcombe did it as shown in the video and all has been fine since. He had an old small screwdriver with the end bent to 90 degrees.
