Hi guys,

I have a very early (1975) MD11C and I want to replace the injectors. Has anyone done this before or does anyone have any tips?

Is it necessary to remove the sleeve as well as the injector?

I'm assuming that there's a special pulling tool, but is the tool not specific to the type of injector mounting?

Thanks for any help.

Do you have the workshop manual ?

If not see http://www.motoren.cloudns.cx/pdfs/volvo/volvo_penta_md11-17.pdf

As far as i can remember no special tool is need to remove the injectors and none is shown in the manual.

All the manual says on injector removal is, "Remove the injectors and fit protective caps on
the tips of the nozzles."

Special tools are needed for removing and fitting the sleeves and they are shown in the manual, but I don't think you need to touch them simply for removing/replacing the injectors.

I had an MD2B, which I think is essentially the same. Injectors came out easily with a wriggle clock/anti-clockwise. However you may get a collection of rust debris around the injector. Try to collect this or blow it out to prevent it falling into the cylinder as you pull the injector out.

Early 11c have pistol type which you can put a spanner on the flats and wiggle them later 11d have pencil type which may require the correct tool
Either way drain the water first in case the sleeves do come loose
A good pump shop should be able to refurbish them more reasonably than replacing

Thanks Scottie.

Does it make any difference doing it while the engine is hot or cold?

Only if it’s fresh water cooled you might want to wait for it to cool before draining

Agree with Vic warming will make removal easier just watch for hot bits though
