My boat is on the hard and I have been informed by a surveyor that the scoop strainer on the engine raw water intake is orientated incorrectly (facing forward when it should be facing aft).
I am trying to remove the scoop strainer but it is an integral through hull fitting.
Any tips on how to remove it?
Thanks.

Generally on a sail boat you fit the straainer facing aft but on a power boat you it the strainer facing forward.

There was a discussion a couple days ago where those who fitted an engine intake with a strainer cut the strainer off as it prevents cleaning out the intake.

I just cut off the strainer bars with an angle grinder with cutting disk.

You could cut the the the back solid part off also so the intake is level with the hull like normal skin fittings.

Mine is partially held on by the nut inside the hull on the skin fitting but with one smallish screw up from underneath into the GRP hull to locate it and stop it turning as you tighten the inner nut. I changed the original brass one for bronze a few years ago along with all other underwater brass fittings, valves, hose tails.

How long has it been like that? Has it ever been a problem? If you do decide to alter it you may need to cut it off and fit new. Good video here of how to do a skin fitting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8p0gysglfUU&t=1083s

Not certain what you mean by integral hull fitting. You won't be able to remove it if it is part of the hull moulding and that also means it is fitted at intended by the builder. I expect you'd need to grind it off.

I haven't seen such a fitting, only the normal through hull types retained by a nut inside the hull. These usually have a small screw on the outside or hidden dimple. The screw or dimple helps keep the fitting aligned when the nut is being tightened. Removal of this type of fitting is pretty simple in theory. Take the hose off, undo the internal nut then clean the flat section on the outside and remove any screw. The fitting then often needs to be turned with large shifters to help ease it out of the hole.

The strainer on my latest boat has been fitted this way round as well, and in theory when fitted to a sailing boat the strainer should be as your surveyor suggests, the theory being that when sailing and not using the engine water is still forced up into the engine Cooling system and possible the engine, so I looked at changing its orientation, then I thought well the previous owner used it in this fashion for over 900 hours with no problem, I have added another 50 hours since owning the boat and found no problem, possible because the Vetus strainer is quite high in the engine compartment which would dissipate the pressure of water, so I decided to leave well alone.
