Removing Painted Signwriting

Hi All,

The signwriting on my boat has been done with paint and I don't like it im afraid. Does anyone know the best way to remove the paint without damaging the boat hull?

I am wanting to get a profesional signwriter to produce some new decals, can anyone recommend a company to use?

Get a very small block of planed wood.

Get a piece of 2000 wet and dry (yes they do make it that fine - find it on eB** if your local Halfords etc doesn't do it) and a bucket with warm water with fairy liquid in.

Very gently start to abraid it, keeping the rubbing as far as possible only to the lettering.

Once the lettering is really really fading, and very patchy, stop, and use a medium grade rubbing compound (preferably on a machine polisher).

Then just as the last bit's about to go, switch to a really fine rubbing compound, and finish it off.

Then lots of polish on that area.

Problem you'll have is that if it's been there years, that bit of GRP will be in better nick than the rest!

Since acetone will remove almost any sort of paint and wont hurt gelcoat, you could dissolve the paint.

Use plenty of rags - black paint contains a lot of pigment.

After removing it the gelcoat should be polished as usual.

In the olden days, when vans were sign written, rather than vinyl stickers, we used to take it off with oven cleaner, the one with a pad. Not sure if it's OK to use on Gel Coat, but can't see that it should hurt it, we used to use it on Cellulose paint.

Can't help with the removal of the old painted, but for your new decals I can strongly recomend a fellow boater, a member of York motor boat club, who has his own graphics company and does a superb job for a good price.

Don't know their remover but must warn against their Polytrol (Owatrol Marin), in case you're tempted after removing the paint.

My previous, white, boat was treated by it's well meaning first owner but, like many others, the Polytrol turned yellow over time and was close to impossible to remove.
