It's that time of year again (a little late I know) to refurb the props on Bizzy Bee. I don't have time to do the paint removal part myself but intend to epoxy etch and apply the coats of enamel paint myself. What's the best process / company to use please. I intend to contact some of the alloy wheel refurbishment businesses around here to do the job put concerned they may put the props in a bath of chemicals then soda / bead blast.. will the chemicals damage the hubs if they do?

Gary last year I had my props blasted , etch primed, sprayed up. Black..
Waste of time..
3 weeks later it was already back to bare metal on the back prop..
This year.. I rubbed them over with coarse sandpaper, and sprayed them silver.
The good news is ..
They still look silver.
Bad news is .
Most of the paint is off..But they dont look too bad.
I have had in previous years a good result with Tough Black..
You can get it from most car shops..
The fact is that they just loose paint whatever you put on.

Gary, be careful of the déjà vu :)

thanks chaps. yep, I am a tad nervous this year in regards to anyone touching the props.. just to be clear, are you saying a chemical bath to remove the paint will risk affecting the rubber in the hub?

I think I may just patch them up myself in that case where the paint has come off

Cos not all of us can afford posh outdrives with Nibral props :p

Serious answer is that the paint stays on for a few months, and does slow down the rate at which the aluminium is dissolving. I usually just use a flap wheel on ye olde corded drill, which nicely covers everything in the garage with dust and simultaneously annoys both Mrs FP and the neighbours.

Aha. I didn't realise that ally props would dissolve if not painted. Are stainless props not an option?

After mucho experimentation, I found that the only paint which lasts is a 2-pack epoxy... Cromadex 7000.
it has the look/effect of a plastic coating and it actually stays on.
Helps if you use an etch primer but not entirely necessary.
Bugga to remove tho.
