Removing old gaskets

Need to clean up my intercooler before refitting it but it still has most of the old gaskets stuck to it and they are very hard and stuck fast.

Can anyone suggest a way of softening and removing them. Intercooler is alloy casting so can't be too aggressive scraping them off.

Abrade surface of gasket, soak in hot water, then try hot air gun and picking at it. Wallpaper steamer worked well for me once, when one happened to be around. This is of course assuming they're paper/card, and not metal.... Trouble I found was, solvents don't get far enough under.

Pop along to your nearest motor factor (i.e. Edmunds Walker type place - not Halfords) and buy some gasket remover. Comes in spray cans.

Gasket remover! Oh, lovely! Wish I'd known about that last year! Comes under the heading of things one would never think existed and therefore don't ask for and that's why we should always ask the experts! I shall buy some immediately.

spray on gasket remover!
when i were a lad the blue serge overalls had a little pocket on the right hand leg in which fitted a stainless steel 1 ft rule, this was used to scrape gaskets off, stir the tea and wack apprentices round the head!
judicious use of a stanley knife blade or a ground down hacksaw blade is also recommended,
