Any tips?

Last summer I had the bright idea that I would strip all the varnish from my boat's teak handrails, etc, and rely instead on the occasional application of Deks Olje (a sort of Danish oil treatment?). On balance, I'm glad I did - it looks great, lasts a fair time and is easy and quick to apply.

The only trouble is that my first applications have suffered from my being a little over zealous. There was a fair amount of "run off" which, it appears, has soaked into the surrounding gelcoat and is now accumulating grime and causing rather unsightly staining.

I've tried using an (extremely gentle) application of Cif, but the cure is only temporary - I need a permanent fix.

Can anyone please tell me if there is a product specifically designed to treat the sort of staining I describe?

TIA,

Ron.

Ron,

First you could try meths, possibly acetone, both safe on gel coat and will break down the oil. Very cheap fix.

If the gel coat is quite porous, then perhaps Y10, it is a stain removing gel substance, that leaches stains out of the gel coat and into the product.

This should stop it coming back and collecting dirt that is sticking to the Olje.

Hope it helps :)

Thanks for the ideas, chaps.

I think I have some left-over Y10 down at the boat - I'll dig it out and have a go when I next visit the old girl. Never even occured to me to try it!

Also have some acetone - worth a try - and I might raid the drinks cabinet for a drop of meths (only joking!).

It might be interesting to try different remedies on different areas of staining for purposes of comparison.

Actually, come to think of it, there might even be some Dilunet lurking in the lazarette - I'll lob a bit of that on as well.

Now, where did I put those overalls..............?

Cheers,

Ron.

Good idea Ron, pictures please :)

I di some Deks Olje at home and got some on the kitchen worktop. It took a long while to get it off using Fairy Liquid extra strong stuff. The tin does warn that it's difficult to remove!

Good luck!
