removing log paddle wheel

I bought my present boat last year and noticed that the log didn't give a reading.
When I laid my boat up for the winter the paddle wheel was covered in weed, hence the problem.

The owner of the boat next to mine in the yard told me that I had to remove the paddle wheel and clean it every time I went out, he insisted that you only take on about a cupful of water into the bilges between removal and sealing the hole.

My paddle wheel is located about 2 feet below the water line, is it safe to remove it whilst the boat is in the water?

No problem - be ready with a towel to mop up - you can stem the flow with your hand - big surprise is the "bright light water" coming in the hole! You should have a blank plug to fit.

I'm not sure about removing everytime - I don't and don't have problems. As far as removing it whilst afloat - you get a fair gush of water in which can panic you the first time. The blank/screw cap should be tied to the skin fitting so that you don't end up with a major problem as it floats off down to some innaccesible corner of the bilge on the inrush of water. Putting back your paddlewheel - be careful in trying to get it inserted quickly that you don't get it crossed or aligned badly and break something.

yes, but Sean should make sure he has the blanking plug before doing it. Best to remove each time you leave the boat, i suppose, but of course i can't be bothered.

I didn't think a leopard would have a paddle wheel thingy, mines' got a new electronic doofer, works very well.

you're right, it has gps only, no paddle wheel thing. Didn't work anyway on the old boat. Shame really, cos it was one of the few things that they have on sail and powerboats so you could take yotties out and they'd freak out that the log says 32.3 or whatever.

How many answers do you want? You seem to have spread you silly problem all over the place. Or is it that you have a real paddle wheel propelled "log"???/boat/steamer. I thought they disappeared with the Mississippi gamblers.
 
dont need to take it out unless it stops working Ifind the best way is to put a bare foot over it it only takes a couple of mins to clean you take on less water than using the blanking plate

I thought the point of this forum was to get answers from other experienced boat users.
