Hi,

What products do you recommend for removing hard barnacle-like growth on the gel-coat just above the waterline, without damaging the gel-coat?

Many thanks, Allan

Things don't usually grow above the waterline. Are you sure it's not just limescale?

Hi Neale,

Yes, perhaps it's more like limescale, but my normal cleaners don't seem to remove it, especially as I don't want to use any abrasive scraper or cleaning pad.

I had the same problem this year, I just used a plastic scraper and carefully used, that got most of it off, I did this in the water. I think when the boat is out of the water, I'll raise the waterline anti-foul.

A saturated solution of Oxalic acid crystals---around 10%. Mix with a packet of wallpaper paste until fairly stiff and "paint" on around the water line. Leave for around 15 minutes and either pressure wash or hose off.
Works every time for me, little or no effort required to get off those hard to remove stains around the water line. GRP comes up bright and shiny and ready to be polished if you want to.
