Servicing winches type of day today..............cannot figure out how to extract the gear spindle to allow removal of the lower ratchet gears - the spindle fits so flush with the centre stem that I cannot lift it/prize it out.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Have you any idea which lewmar winch it is? Also - how far did you get with removing the drum?
Usually once the circlip is removed from the top, then the drum lifted off, the gear spindles and then the lower gears removed.. the central section will then just lift out. Sometimes it might be a self tailer in which case there is a large circular flat'ish nut that will need unscrewing first.

The lewmar website is not so easy to navigate.. but their winch manual can be found here
http://www.pyacht.com/Lewmar-Winch-Service-Manual.pdf

This might help with both working out what model of winch you have and how it all fits together. Let us know how you get on now...

Ah.. just re-read your post in more detail. How to remove the gear spindle!

They should just lift out.. a fine screwdriver under the lip should just lever them upwards. Just held in with old grease and friction.

Assuming you have lifted the drum off, there should be a plastic wedge in the side of the spindle which just pulls ot sideways.

Ah.. the winch manual is on that page.

Strange. I was on that page earlier but if you then click on 'winches' on the left you are taken away from any sign of a manual.

Yes, sorry about being secretive about the actual model !!

They are 3 speed 44's non-ST'ing.

The exploded diagram seems to illustrate that there is a notch which allows you to put a screwdriver or similar in to prise the gear spindle out. Not on mine- so seems as though it will just require perseverance.
Anything I need to be careful of when removing the gears themselves?
