I'm having to change the engine mounts under my Volvo MD2B. These consist of a rubber cylinder around a single threaded spindle, with a bell-shaped metal thingy more or less covering the rubber part. This metal part simply lifts off. Now, I assume the mount should 'simply' unscrew from a threaded bolt set into the GRP of the engine bay, but I cannot get it to shift. The mounts are so old the rubber has fused to the GRP, I reckon. Can anyone confirm the mount does unscrew before I do some damage to the boat or myself?

If you can post a picture we will be able to see your problem a bit better. They sound just like cheap mountings I've seen, but they had four wood screws going into the engine bearers.

Mmmm! Idid it time after time!-the one under the fuel filter a "b" to get at! In my boat the mount was attached to a plate and was held to it by a nut which sat in a hole in the bearer. The plate was bolted down to the bearer by two bolts into captive nuts. I always dreaded that the captive nuts would become deglassed and go round and round so I couldnt get the plate off-luckily this never happened. When I got the plate off I then had to unscew the nut which was always on very tightly. I used to wedge the plate and then use the largest spanner I had to loosen the nut. If you dont have this system then you will have to watch that you dont deglass the captive nut. I found that you could support the engine and remove the foot before getting at the mount . If the nut does deglass you will have little alternative but to cut the bearer to remove the nut and then reglass. Good luck!
